"I have succeeded by daring to fail"

Phil Rogers

It is not uncommonfor students come to class and amongst the first things they tell me is that
they "have no artistic talent" and are "no good at art".
Sometimes I'll hear the story about how a school art teacher told them that
very thing. More often than not; it soon becomes clear that these students
where lied too!

A couple of daysago I was talking with Geoff about this and he asked: 'what do you think gives
someone artistic ability?’ I answered that its fearlessness and willingness to
play.

But to be an artist- and perhaps especially a potter you must also dare to fail!

Only another potterknows the trepidation and excitement of opening a kiln- the joy and the
heartache- sometimes despair! When you are so sure you have put all your
metaphorical bricks in a row only to have them crashing down with that opening.

On this page Imight be brave enough to share some of my own failures and what if anything can
be learnt from them.
